In the culture of South Asia especially India, a hijra (Urdu: ہجڑا ,Hindi: हिजड़ा), is usually considered a member of "the third gender" — neither man nor woman. Most are physically male or intersex, but some are physically female. Hijras usually refer to themselves linguistically as female, and usually dress as women.
In other words: In India, some gay men cut their balls off because being your ordinary run of the mil flamer like they are here in the west isn’t good enough. They would rather pretend to be strange, supernatural beings which is what tends to happen when you cut off your own nuts. I think that is a pretty hefty price to pay just to be different, but who am I to say that something isn’t getting lost in the cultural translation.
